Eileen Roach

Each week, Mrs. Roach meets with every class for 30 or 45 minutes. This time includes read aloud, library skills, and book selection time.

Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Many of the students are reading books from Vermont's own Dorothy Canfield Fisher (DCF) Children's Book Award list. Eash year's list includes 30 books, for students grades 4 to 8. Authors include Vermonters, such as Jesse Haas and Karen Hesse, and national favorites, like Avi, Lois Lowry, and Harry Mazer. Vermont children spend most of the school year reading and talking about DCF books and then in April vote on their favorite. Learn more about the books and the award and what Vernon students think about them.

Red Clover Book Award

The Red Clover Award is given annually to one of ten picture books nominated by a committee comprised of teachers and librarians and voted on by Vermont children. Its purpose is to “help children to develop an appreciation for excellence in writing and illustrations that will stay with them all of their lives.” The Red Clover Children's Choice Picture Book Award promotes the reading and discussion of the best of contemporary picture books in most of Vermont's elementary schools. Each year over 23,000 K-4 students read or have read to them the 10 nominated books. Past nominees and winners include Jules Feiffer's Bark, George, Peggy Rathmann's Ten Minutes Till Bedtime, Thacher Hurd's Art Dog, Margie Palatini and Howard Fine's Piggie Pie! and Robert Blake's Akiak.

Past DCF Winners

First given in 1957, the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award has honored quality literature for children for 50 years now.  Each spring, a committee of eight carefully selects 30 books to comprise the DCF Master List.  After reading at least 5 books from the list, students then vote for their favorite titles the following spring.  The winning author is invited to visit Vermont to speak with children about the experience of writing such fine literature for such fine people.

Past Red Clover Winners

The Red Clover Award was created in 1995 by Vermont's Windham County Reads, a non-profit literacy organization dedicated to bringing families and books together.

Conceived by Eileen Christelow and named for Vermont's state flower by Jessie Haas, this children's choice award was designed to help young children experience the unique genius of the picture book and develop a lasting appreciation for excellence in writing and illustraton.

The Eyes of Gray Wolf, written by Jonathan London and illustrated by Jon Van Zyle, was the award winner during the program's initial year in Windham County, Vermont, and the program quickly went statewide under the leadership of Mother Goose Programs.
