Second Grade

Joan Cook

Joan Cook

I grew up in the Northeast Kingdom.  One of the best babysitters in Newport, I went into teaching because I loved children.  I had great recommendations  from many families as I left the north and attended Castleton State College to earn my B.S. in Elementary Education with a minor in mathematics. At that time, I was certified K-12 and I began my career in Newport Town teaching grade 5-8 math. After a great student teaching experience in second grade, I was fortunate enough to land a job at Vernon Elementary in that same grade level. I’ve been here ever since teaching second, first and fifth grades.  I’m happy to be back to second grade after a number of years in fifth. I continued my education at Keene State College earning my Master’s degree and have taken many courses and workshops to enhance my teaching skills and knowledge.

For many years I was a true Vermonter and was almost reluctant to give up my Vt. driver’s license as my husband  brought me across the river into New Hampshire. I just love our location in Spofford and enjoy gardening around the yard. (Ask me about some of my raspberry recipes.) Most of the time I work, but sometimes you will find me relaxing at the beach, either at the lake or ocean. A new hobby I’m learning is finding shark’s teeth. It’s so exciting to find one and realize this Megalodon shark’s tooth was around when dinosaurs roamed the earth. My husband and I also enjoy a motorcycle ride on a summer evening or a day ride to view the foliage. Family is very important to me (By the way, I am one of a dozen from my family that have taught or are teaching.) and I enjoy being involved.(Go Proctor girls soccer! I want to watch my niece, Ashley, play in the state playoffs.) I have participated in two Habitat for Humanity Builds and enjoy helping others.

Helping students be the best learners they can be and celebrating their successes puts a smile on my face. It has been and is wonderful to be part on this school community. The families are supportive and I feel the Vernon Elementary staff is part of my extended family and my friends.
