I graduated from Sweet Briar College in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and teacher certification in pre-k to sixth grade general education. The next year I graduated from the Marlboro College Graduate Center with a master’s of arts in teaching with technology. While teaching at Vernon I have been trained as a Trainer of Teachers in Thinking Maps and taken courses in skillful teaching, Fundations, the first three modules of LETRS, the Stern Center’s Time for Teachers, and ALL KIDS for teaching ELL students.
In a year of teaching technology to 5 to 12 year old I cover every topic from “This is a mouse.” to internet safety, creating presentations, and editing a wiki page. In my years at Vernon the student knowledge of computers has increased exponentially and not just because of me. The computer ownership in our school has gone from 50-75% when I took informal surveys in my first years to 99-100% now. This has changed our kids from digital immigrants to digital natives. Their comfort with all things technology has made my job easier and harder, but has made them fluent with any computer, digital mobile device or peripheral.
If you had asked me when I was eight what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have told you a teacher. If you had asked me what my interests were I would have told you reading and using my computer. Go figure! Now my interests also include theater, knitting, and crafting. I have been married to Tony since 2002 and my son Jackson was born (on my birthday) in 2009. We also have a cat named Orlando. |
