Science in Grade 5
by Nicolette Rivas and Devin Millerick In science we have been learning about the ecosystem. In the ecosystem there are many food chains and food webs. The food chain is made up of a producer (plants), 1st order consumer (a consumer is something that gets its energy from something else), 2nd order consumer, 3rd order consumer, etc. One example of a small food chain is grass (producer) - deer (1st order consumer) - human (2nd order consumer). With all that talking about the ecosystem we have a tank of salmon. We learned that the salmon cycle starts with an egg, then alevin, after fry, parr, also smolt and last adult. We have been observing the salmon. We have watched them go from an egg to an alevin and we have compared and contrasted them each week. We will let them go just before the fry stage which will be around the end of April.
Math in Grade 5
by Gabby Carpenter and Theresa Underwood In math we have been learning about polygons and quadrillaterals. In one lesson we were learning how to measure the area of a square and triangle. Also we are learning about decimals. We learned how to shade the decimal on a tenths, hundredths and thousandths grid. Recently weʼve been learning about fractions and percents and been playing fun math games.
Literacy in Grade 5
by Caroline Merkle and Karissa Perkins In literacy we are doing reports. We each pick a topic and do research about it. We started a new book called the Watsonʼs Go to Birmingham - 1963. Itʼs about diversity. We have discussed racism and poverty. We are also learning grammar usage with capitalization and punctuation in our writing. Next we will be introduced to personal reflective essay and Ms. Mickel will be picking out a new literature book.
5C’s Homeroom
by Alexus Vergobbe and Veronica McKay In 5Cʼs homeroom we just got a student teacher in our class named Ms. Mickel. She is very nice. She comes from Keene State College. In read aloud we just started a book called Tangerine by Edward Bloor. Every Friday at the end of the day we all clean our desks, do our jobs, and then we get to play a game!
Notes from Student Council
Student Council members are finding ways to help the school. We are not completely used to our jobs and are still coming up with ideas to make our school a better place. Some of our ideas are a Graffiti Club (which we are trying to start up again) and an ice skating rink. It’s too late to start one this year, but we will try to do one next year. Kes Rooks
