March Reading Challenge
The March Reading Challenge is well underway. Students, teachers and parents are encouraged to participate in this Windham County Reads program which encourages reading everyday. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways at home - shared reading, quiet family time, or reading the same book as your child and then having a discussion about it later. Reading just 15 minutes each day allows this activity to become a daily part of your childʼs schedule creating life long readers..... and it is so much fun. As I say to the students regularly, if you have a good book you are never alone. There is always something to do when you have a good book, or a place to visit or learn about something new! Please consider participating in this program this year. Who knows, if you and your child successfully complete the pledge sheet someone may win one of the awesome prizes donated by one of the local businesses in the area. Good luck and happy reading. Remember all completed contracts must be returned by Monday, April 5, 2010.
Kindergarten is Celebrating
We are celebrating the amazing growth that happens this time of year. When we look back at the pictures from pre-school screening last April, it is hard to believe those little wide eyed children are the same children sitting in our class. Not only do they look more mature, but they act more mature in so many way.s They are willing to take risks and make mistakes. They have become more resilient with the rigors of school. They have made friendships, learned to work as a team member, accepted that some things are hard for some and easy for others, and learned the hardest lesson of all in kindergarten - taking turns and waiting! We are also celebrating that February was a month of kindness from learning about Martin Luther King Jr., to Valentines Day, 100ʼs day, and Presidentʼs Day too. We learned about the influence one person can make in this world. For 100ʼs day we had a classroom can drive. We collected canned food items from each student and their families. We counted them, sorted them, and played with them in our school store. I am pleased to let you know during February vacation I was able to donate those 130 cans of food to the Brattleboro Food Bank thanks to the generosity of our class! It is hard to believe in just a few short weeks Peggy Stetzel and I will be meeting next years wide eyed kindergarten class as they start their journey into The Vernon School Community.
